Teaser-Tuesdays-Purple

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Purple Booker. Here are the rules if you want to play along:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give that to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. Even the wise cannot see all ends.

~ Gandalf, The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien

I love this quote. It appears in this book, but also in The Fellowship of the Ring, where it was originally spoken.

This book is taking a very long time, I know, but Tolkien is something that tends to go slowly. I do want to try and finish this one this week though.

Where now are the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the harp on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

~ The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien

Yep, still working through The Lord of the Rings. Slow going, but such beautiful, beautiful language.

He strode forward, but the old man was gone. There was no trace of him to be found near at hand, and they did not dare to wander far. The moon had set and the night was very dark.

~ The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien

Yep, I finished The Fellowship of the Ring last night and moving on to The Two Towers. I also watched the Fellowship movie over the weekend. Ooohh, I had forgotten just how beautiful these movies are! I’m going to watch The Two Towers after I finish reading it, and probably do the same with The Return of the King.

“Regiments of black crows are flying over all the land between the Mountains and the Grayflood,” he said, “and they have passed over Hollin. They are not natives here; they are crebain out of Fangorn and Dunland. I do not know what they are about: possibly there is some trouble away south from which they are fleeing; but I think they are spying out the land. I have also glimpsed many hawks flying high in the sky. I think we ought to move again this evening. Hollin is no longer wholesome for us: it is being watched.”

~ The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

It’s been a really long time since I’ve read The Lord of the Rings. I am very much enjoying it.

Booking Through Thursday for 6/4/15

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly blog that asks a specific question each week. This week’s topic:

Graduation

May and June . . . Graduation season.

If you were to give a book as a graduation present to some eager person ready to launch themselves into the world, what would it be?

This is a really hard one! There are so many things people should know as they go out into the world. I think a book that would be a good choice (if they hadn’t already read it) would be The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien. There are many lessons to be learned from this story. Life is a journey, one that doesn’t always work out the way you think it will. Appearances can often be deceiving. Sometimes you need to rely on other people, but be careful of the ones that you choose to trust. Most importantly, sometimes the smallest, most insignificant person can make the biggest difference.

Congratulations to the class of 2015! If you have any books to recommend to the newest wave of graduates, please leave them in comments!
